You're reading: Mogherini: Local elections must take place in Ukraine despite martial law

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has said the local elections in Ukraine must take place despite the state of martial law imposed in ten regions of Ukraine.

Today the [Ukrainian] prime minister and I talked about the local elections that are supposed to take place, in particular, in the regions in which the state of martial law is in effect. We have been given guarantees that interim measures will soon end and the work will continue as soon as possible. And this will not affect the electoral process in the country, she said at a joint news briefing with Ukraine’s Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, following a meeting the Ukraine-EU Association Council in Brussels on December 17.

She said the imposition of martial law was discussed not only at her meeting with the Ukrainian prime minister but also during President Poroshenko’s visit to Brussels last week.

Mogherini said it is necessary to avoid negative consequences for respective regions of Ukraine in which the state of martial law has been declared.
