You're reading: Most Ukrainians don’t expect life to improve in 2019

Fifty-nine percent of people in Ukraine see the political situation in the country as tense and 27.8 percent as explosive, according to a poll conducted by the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences with support from the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation.

According to the poll, the results of which were announced at a press conference in Kyiv on Dec. 21, only 5.7 percent of respondents see the political situation in the country as generally calm, 1.9 percent describe it as good, and 5.6 percent are undecided.

46.2 percent of respondents believe the current situation could be best described by the statement “It’s not possible to tolerate our difficult situation anymore,” 36.3 percent chose “Life is hard but bearable,” 8.7 percent chose “It’s not as bad as it used to be, and it’s possible to live,” and 8.9 percent were undecided.

52.1 percent of respondents believe life will not improve in the coming year, 30.8 percent are unsure, and 17.1 percent said they believe life will more or less improve.

The poll was conducted from September 13 to 29, 2018 in all the regions of Ukraine for the exception of Crimea and the occupied territories in Donbas. A total of 1,800 people were polled.
