You're reading: No assassination attempts on Yanukovych revealed – State Guard of Ukraine

The investigation didn’t find any indication of assassination attempts on the former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, the head of the Department of the State Guard of Ukraine Valeriy Heletey said.

“As part of the official investigation that had been held before, no assassination attempts were uncovered. All military personnel at the Department of the State Guard were interrogated. They were in the last cortege of Yanukovych and refused to leave the territory of Ukraine with him. No one said anything about any assassination attempts,” Heletey said in an interview to the Today newspaper published on Jan. 6.

At the same time he didn’t rule out that the chief bodyguard of Yanukovych, Kostyantyn Kobzar, could report him about any alleged attempts.

“I do not exclude this. Being well aware of Yanukovych’s character traits, his phobias, he [Kobzar] worked hard to instill fear in his chief’s security detail. On the other hand, he tried to bolster his authority in the eyes of the person he protected.”

Heletey also said that 15 employees of the Department of the State Guard followed Yanukovych out of Ukraine. Prior to leaving, they had written letters of resignation and returned their IDs, duty weapons, and special equipment.
