You're reading: Number of crimes committed in Ukraine decreasing, but still high

The National Police of Ukraine have for the most part managed to control the public security in Ukraine; however the number of crimes committed in the country continues to be high, Serhiy Knyazev, chief of the National Police of Ukraine, has said.

Since the start of 2018, the police have been contacted 8 million times that is several times more than in the past years, Knyazev told a news conference in Kyiv on December 20 that was called to sum up the police’s activities this year.

The chief of the National Police said the number of robberies decreased to some extent; however, the number of premeditated murders has stayed on the same level; however, an absolute majority of them has been solved.

Commenting on the public security situation in the country, Kniazev said 86,000 public events have been held in Ukraine that attracted about 29 million visitors. In this context, he said the newly created Police of Dialogue have worked well. He said eight units of Police of Dialogue have been set up in several towns in Ukraine.

The chief of the National Police said in the outgoing year, the police fully completed the formation of KORD special force units and created the Department of Strategic Investigations, which deals with countering organized crime.

Speaking of countering the illegal circulation of arms and ammunition, Knyazev said that in 2018, 1,817 firearms and 2,000 grenades have been withdrawn from circulation.

As for the plans for next year, the National Police will in particular focus on reforming the criminal police, investigating criminal misconduct cases, launching the detective project, introducing photo and video recording of traffic rules violations on the roads, and creating an air police unit to ensure support for public security, he said.

“The figures show that for the most part, the National Police have been in control of the public security in our nation. The number of offenses is decreasing; however, unfortunately, this figure is still high,” the chief of the National Police said.
