You're reading: Ombudswoman: 56 children disappeared during Donbas conflict, only 23 found

Fifty-six children have disappeared in eastern Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict in Donbas, of which 23 children have been found and another 33 are still being searched for, Verkhovna Rada Human rights Commissioner Liudmyla Denisova has said.

According to a report posted on the website of the Ukrainian ombudswoman on Friday, on the occasion of International Missing Children’s Day, Denisova requested information from the department for preventive activities of the National Police of Ukraine about the children missing in Ukraine.

According to the National Police, in 2017, the territorial units of the National Police received 8,124 reports on the disappearance of children. Some 742 criminal proceedings were opened under Article 115 (premeditated murder) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Forty-eight children were not found in 2017.

This year, territorial police bodies received 2,937 applications and reports about the disappearance of children. Some 222 criminal proceedings were opened under Article 115 (premeditated murder) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. As of April 30, 2018, 57 children have not been found.
