You're reading: Parubiy grateful to Scotland for recognizing Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainian people

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Andriy Parubiy has met with Speaker of the Scottish Parliament Ken Macintosh during his visit to the UK and thanked for the debates in the Scottish Parliament on the Holodomor (Famine).

“This year is the 85th anniversary of this great tragedy, and it is important for us to understand the essence of this event, this tragedy for Ukraine. It is especially important for us that all parties – both the opposition and the coalition – supported the joint resolution that the Holodomor is a genocide against the Ukrainians,” the press service of the Verkhovna Rada apparatus quoted Parubiy as saying.

In addition, he spoke in favor of intensifying cooperation at the level of friendship groups of the parliaments of both countries with the aim of “bringing information about the situation in Ukraine and enlisting greater support in our cooperation.”

The parties also discussed issues related to Brexit, and the situation in eastern Ukraine.

Macintosh noted that the problems related to Brexit do not hinder development of relations with both EU countries and with other countries. In addition, he expressed his support for Ukraine.
