Opponents of adopting a law on the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language are investing a lot to thwart the approval of the initiative, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy has said.
“Crazy resources are being invested, including media resources, to thwart the adoption of this historical law. I am convinced that we all are interested in considering the law in accordance with the stipulated procedures in order to prevent any breakdown,” he said during a meeting with the leaders of party factions and groups in parliament on Monday.
“I am convinced that all factions can be the guarantor of the fact that the law on language will be adopted. And we will do it perfectly,” Parubiy said.
He said in the upcoming plenary week parliament will continue to consider in the second reading the draft law on the Ukrainian language, and on Tuesday will begin work on the document with amendment No. 490.
“On this occasion, discussions took place in the hall. Some of the people’s deputies insisted that they should immediately end consideration of the bill. Someone, in my opinion, is deliberately trying to delay the consideration,” Parubiy said.
According to the schedule, on March 19-22, the deputies are working in plenary mode.
As reported, the Verkhovna Rada began to consider bill number 5670-d on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state at a plenary session on February 28.
Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy found it difficult to predict how many meetings may take consideration of such a large number of edits.
Parliament deputies last week devoted to the work on the draft law, but reviewed less than 490 out of 2,000.
