You're reading: Person close to Russia’s Kadyrov regime on extortion mission detained in Kyiv

Police in Kyiv on Sept. 17 conducted a special operation during which a Russian citizen with ties to leader of Russia’s Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov was detained. What appeared to be narcotics were found in the car of the detained individual.

Police acted on a call about a suspicious automobile, conducted a search, the press service of the National Police said on Sept. 18.

“During the search, which was carried out with witnesses, police found a white powder-like substance in the pocket of the driver. A criminal investigation has been opened,” the press service said.

Police said they had established the identity of the driver, a citizen of a foreign country born in 1995. Two other persons were in the car, born in 1994 and 1996, respectively.

“Police found a plastic bag with white powder in the salon of the car. It has been sent for analysis, and the foreigner was detained,” the press service said.

A criminal investigation under Part 1 of Article 309 (illegal preparation or possession of narcotics without intent to sell) of Ukraine’s Criminal Code has been opened. The offense is punishable by up to three years in jail.

Police provided no further information about the person detained.

Meanwhile, the press service of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said the persons involved have close ties to the regime of Kadyrov.

“The SBU received information that persons with close ties to the Kadyrov regime had arrived in Ukraine and the goal of their visit was extortion. The SBU gave this information to the police, which took lawful actions,” the SBU’s press service said.
