A pilot law-enforcement project, “Police Detectives,” has been launched in eight regions of Ukraine since June 1, chief of the National Police of Ukraine, Serhiy Knyazev, has said.

“We’ve decided that as of June 1 we would launch the Police Detectives project in eight regions, where about 90% of criminal police personnel have changed their status for that of investigators,” the National Police media liaison office quoted Knyazev as saying.

The project covers Kyiv, Zaporizhia, Lviv, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Khmelnytsky regions. It will be implemented on the basis of district police units.

Knyazev said that the remaining police officers will perform direct duties of the criminal police: collect intelligence, run operational search cases, identify dead bodies, and search for missing persons.

Follow-up checks at the selected units are scheduled by the end of the summer, he said.
