You're reading: Police investigating storming of Lviv City Council as group hooliganism

The Lviv police have opened criminal proceedings on the fact of hooliganism committed by a group of persons in the Lviv city council yesterday, and are investigating the incident.

“On this fact, criminal proceedings have been opened under Part 2 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (hooliganism). A pretrial investigation is underway,” the liaison department of the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in Lviv region said on Thursday.

As reported, about 11:10 on May 29, a group of several dozen representatives of right-wing public organizations and organizations of ATO (Anti-Terrorist Operation) veterans broke down the entrance doors to the Lviv City Council and burst into the building.

According to the press service of the city council, at the time of the breakthrough, clashes with the officials of the city council and employees of the municipal guard occurred. The head of the Lviv mayor’s administration was beaten up and was hospitalized with injuries of the spleen. Also, assailants beat an employee of the municipal guard.

This offence is punished pursuant to Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine “Hooliganism,” i.e. a gross violation of public order out of motives of apparent disrespect for society, which is accompanied by particular audacity or exceptional cynicism, and Part 2 of this article – those same actions committed by a group of persons – is punished by imprisonment term for up to five years or imprisonment for up to four years.
