Employees of the National Police of Ukraine have identified 21 instances of garbage removal from Lviv region to other regions of the country and opened criminal cases for land pollution involving 11 of them.

“Starting from October 2016, National Police officers have identified 21 facts of garbage removal from Lviv region to other regions of the country. In each of the cases drivers of garbage trucks attempted to dump the garbage in inappropriate places,” the police communications office said on March 15.

As noted in the statement, garbage truck drivers from Lviv region have attempted to dump garbage in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhia, Poltava, Sumy and Cherkasy regions. In most of the instances the garbage trucks moved in columns and dumped the refuse in one location.

Three such garbage trucks were identified in Vinnytsia region and 11 in Dnipropetrovsk region. Each truck carried 15 tonnes of refuse.

“Piles of garbage often weighed from 30 to 80 tonnes and were dumped in fields, forests and ravines, polluting the environment and creating an ecological hazard,” the police said.

In order to prevent such transgressions in the future, police are asking regional offices which order garbage removal to ensure garbage truck drivers have documents with information about the pickup points and garbage removal destinations.
