Most of Ukrainian citizens (61%) see the level of tension in society as high and put the blame for this on the incumbent administration and tycoons, as is seen from the findings of a public opinion poll conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences, which the Ukrainian news website ZN.UA (the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia weekly) cited on Friday.

In particular, 23% of those polled described the level of tension in society as extremely high and 38% as above the average.

Asked what factors they believe prompt the growing tension in society, 68% of the respondents mentioned the continuing hostilities in eastern Ukraine, 48% growing unemployment, 46% the people’s impoverishment because of growing prices and tariffs, 44% corruption, 41% impunity and lawlessness of government officials, and 34% lack of confidence in the administration.

Most of the people lay the blame for this situation on the incumbent authorities: 74% are of the view that the president, the government, and the Verkhovna Rada bear primary responsibility for the worsening situation, 52% are inclined to accuse politicians and 42% tycoons for this, and about 30% attribute the growing tension to the Russian leadership’s actions.

The poll of 1,800 respondents was conducted by the Institute of Sociology in cooperation with the Intellectual Perspective charitable foundation in all regions of Ukraine on July 3 to July 25, 2017.
