You're reading: Poll shows half of Ukrainians ready to vote for entry into EU

About half of Ukrainians are ready to support Ukraine’s entry into the European Union at a referendum, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology said after having conducted a related poll.

As many as 49 percent said they would vote for Ukraine’s accession to the EU at a hypothetical referendum in Sept. 2016, 25 percent would be against, and another 25 percent were either undecided or would not vote, the sociologists said.

Excluding undecided citizens, the referendum would have a turnout of roughly 74 percent and the votes would be divided in the following manner: 66 percent for joining the EU and 34 percent against.

The poll showed that the idea of Ukraine’s affiliation with the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan was not popular. Only 18 percent would vote for Ukraine’s entry into the Customs Union at a referendum, while 55 percent would be against and 27 percent were undecided or did not want to vote.

The poll was held on September 16-26, 2016. A total of 2,040 respondents were interviewed in 110 populated localities across Ukraine.
