SOCHI – Washington is hoping that Moscow will be able to reach an agreement with new authorities in Kyiv and release Ukrainian sailors detained during the Kerch Strait incident, U.S. Secretary of States Mike Pompeo said.

“I urged Russia to reach out to Ukraine’s new president to demonstrate leadership by taking step towards breaking the stalemate. We would, in particular, welcome the release of the Ukrainian crewmen detained near the Kerch Strait last,” Pompeo said at a news conference following his meeting with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on May 14.
