President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has called on the countries of the European Union and international organizations to recognize the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
“I urge the EU countries and international organizations to follow the path taken by the United States and recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people,” the head of state wrote on Twitter on October 4 evening.
Poroshenko also noted that he had discussed this issue with Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak at a meeting in Kyiv on October 4.
As reported, the U.S. Senate adopted a resolution that recognizes the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian Embassy to the United States reported.
“The U.S. Senate has unanimously adopted a bipartisan resolution, which was the first ever legal act of the U.S. Congress, where the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian people,” the embassy said on Facebook on October 4.
Thus, in the operative part of the document, the Senate recognized the conclusions of the U.S. Government Commission regarding the famine in Ukraine (dated April 22, 1988) and that “Stalin and those around him committed genocide against the Ukrainians in 1932–1933.”
In addition, the resolution also condemns the systematic violations of human rights, including the rights to self-determination and freedom of speech, committed by the Soviet government against the Ukrainian people, and also expresses the deepest condolences to the victims of the Holodomor and their families.
“The draft of such a resolution was also approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now awaiting consideration during the plenary session,” the embassy said.
