You're reading: Poroshenko: Debates should be conducted in several rounds

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said there should be several rounds of debates with showman and presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

“I am very pleased that Volodymyr Zelenskiy accepted my proposal for a debate … I am firmly convinced that debates will take place,” he told reporters at the Olympiysky National Sports Complex after giving blood samples at the medical center of the complex.

Poroshenko noted that it would be good for several rounds of debates to be held.

The president believes that during the rounds of debates it is necessary to discuss the key issue of “the powers of the commander-in-chief.” Also, according to him, it is necessary to hold discussions on the defense and security of Ukraine and “a debate on foreign policy.”

He said the third round of debates should be about issues involving the constitutional rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens.

Poroshenko arrived at the medical aid station of the Olympiysky stadium earlier on April 5 for drug and alcohol tests.

A paramedic told the president that samples of his blood, urine and hair would have to be taken.

Zelenskiy also had similar tests at a private clinic in Kyiv on April 5 morning, an Interfax correspondent reported.

Zelenskiy said that the results of his tests would be ready in three days, promising to make them public.

“I didn’t come to the Olympiysky stadium because it has no laboratory. No one knows whether a medical laboratory exists there,” he said.

When asked by a journalist why he did not take the tests at the “clinic of his friend,” Andriy Palchevsky, Zelenskiy said “it’s simply because I know him.”

The second round of Ukraine’s presidential election is due to take place on April 21.
