In view of the upcoming elections in Ukraine and the European Union in 2019, Presidents Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine and Joseph Daul of the European People’s Party (EPP) have reached an agreement to join efforts to counteract Russia’s meddling in electoral processes.

The two presidents met in Helsinki on November 7 as part of Poroshenko’s visit to Finland, the press service of the Ukrainian head of state said.

“The presidents have coordinated their stances on the strengthening of the political and sanctions pressure on Russia in view of the planned illegitimate elections in the occupied territories of Donbas, “the creeping annexation” by Russia of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, and large-scale violations of human rights by Russia in Donbas and Crimea,” the statement reads.

The EPP’s president confirmed his support for Ukraine on the path to getting nearer to the European Union, implementing reforms, and fighting the Russian aggression.

Poroshenko is paying a working visit to Finland from November 7 to 8. He is going to attend the party’s congress and deliver an address at the extended summit of the European People’s Party.
