The European Union will provide assistance to Ukraine to help the socio-economic development of areas neighboring the Sea of Azov, President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine has said.

He said a respective initiative was supported by the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union during its meeting on Nov. 19.

“For the first time ever has the EU’s [Foreign Affairs] Council discussed the aggressive moves by Russia in the Sea of Azov. I am thankful [to them] for approving an initiative to increase the EU’s assistance to Ukraine for the socio-economic development of the areas in Ukraine neighboring the Sea of Azov,” Poroshenko tweeted on Twitter on Nov. 19.
