WASHINGTON – The United States Congress could pass a resolution recognizing Holodomor, the 1932-1933 man-made famine in Ukraine, as a genocide, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.

“I have just had a meeting with Congress Speaker Paul Ryan, with the leader of Democrats in Congress, Mrs. [Nancy] Pelosi, with Congressmen, where we received yet another confirmation of the bilateral support by Congress, Senate for Ukraine. Above all, the result of the meeting is that I raised the issue of Congress considering a resolution and recognizing Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian people,” Poroshenko told journalists at the end of his U.S. visit in Washington on Wednesday.

He added that his visit to the U.S. began from visiting a monument to Holodomor victims in Washington. “We received full support from Congressmen who agreed to speed up the consideration of this resolution,” Poroshenko said.
