Ukraine’s former president Petro Poroshenko has congratulated the Ukrainians who were released on Saturday as part of a prisoner swap with Russia, and called on the government and the opposition to continue fighting the “nemesis.”

“The release of the Ukrainians – the Kremlin’s prisoners – is a great and joyful event not only for them and their families but also for every Ukrainian in the whole world. Welcome back home!” Poroshenko wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

He noted that as someone who had been involved in efforts to secure the release, he felt proud that the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea had “pushed” the Russian leadership “against the wall and forced it to finally release our heroes.”

At the same time, Poroshenko added: “We should not be relaxed by today’s uplifted mood. We are facing an exhausting struggle against Ukraine’s nemesis (. . .). This is the joint work of the government and the opposition.”
