Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said he expects a positive decision of the Council of the European Union in the coming weeks on granting a visa-free regime by the EU for Ukrainian citizens.

“I sincerely congratulate everyone on the successful vote in the European Parliament. Now the ball is in the EU Council’s court. We expect a positive decision in the coming weeks. We are in constant contact with the leaders of European countries, I am working on making this happen as soon as possible,” Poroshenko said in his televised address to the Ukrainian people on occasion of the European Parliament’s decision on granting a visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens.

The president noted that the visa-free regime “will have considerable practical importance for many citizens.”

“Almost 3 million Ukrainians have already received biometric passports or passports, which are necessary for visa-free trips. In 2016 alone, Ukrainians crossed the state border with the countries of the European Union more than 15 million times,” Poroshenko said.

He stressed that the Ukrainian government should work to ensure that the number of citizens who can afford financially to travel to Europe should grow.
