Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree ordering the provision of humanitarian aid to Indonesia where a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and tsunami in late September killed over 1,700 people and caused mass destruction.

The presidential decree, No. 338/2018, was published on the website of the head of state on Oct. 23.

In late September, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, followed by a series of aftershocks with a magnitude of 6.1, which triggered a tsunami.

As of Oct. 7, the death toll from earthquakes and a tsunami in Indonesia reached 1,763, the country’s disaster management agency said. Another estimated 5,000 people remained unaccounted for.

Poroshenko appealed to the Ukrainian government regarding the provision of humanitarian aid to Indonesia as early as Oct. 4.

“Ukrainian aid with food and medicines can save lives. This is the position of a true friend and partner. And we always respond to such events,” the presidential press service quoted Poroshenko as saying.
