Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said he intends to call Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on April 19 to discuss a request for a tomos on the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian Autocephalous Church is one of the institutional foundations of our statehood. Allow me to communicate this spirit in the phone conversation with the ecumenical patriarch which is about to take place, and we will show the position of the parliament, the position of the president, the position of the people, and the position of Ukrainian hierarchs today,” Poroshenko said in the Verkhovna Rada on April 19 after deputies backed the president’s request to Patriarch Bartholomew to issue a tomos on the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
