Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that the completed tender for staffing the new Supreme Court is the start of a renewed system of justice. He called on Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine deputies to make the necessary changes to procedural codes during their next week of plenary sessions scheduled for September.

“A unique competition has just ended for forming the new Supreme Court of Ukraine. There were many things that were done during it “for the first time.” This gives me weighty grounds to request several minutes of your attention, in order that I may explain to you the importance of this process,” Poroshenko said on July 28 in Kyiv. The text of his remarks is posted on the president’s official website.

According to the president, for the first time in Ukraine the composition of the court was established by an open, transparent tender, during which seven applicants competed for one seat.

Poroshenko said 120 finalists had already completed all stages of the competition and that Ukraine’s High Justice Council would vet them during the course of a month.

“On the basis of the High Court of Justice’s decision, a presidential decree will be drafted,” Poroshenko said.

“In order for the Supreme Court to begin work as soon as possible, I request that deputies during their first week of plenary sessions adopt all necessary measures to procedural codes,” he said.
