You're reading: Poroshenko signs decree on commission for selecting candidates for Constitutional Court judges

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree on the competitive commission for selecting candidates for the post of judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine with regard to persons appointed by the head of state, the presidential press service has reported.

The decree indicates the personnel of the competitive commission responsible for the selection and responsibilities of its experts.

According to the decree, those selected to the commission are Volodymyr Butkevych, a retired judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Doctor of Law, Professor (by agreement), Mykhailo Mykiyevych, Head of the Department of European Law at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Doctor of Law, Professor (by agreement), Mykola Onischuk, Rector of the National School of Judges of Ukraine, Doctor of Law (by agreement), Svitlana Seriohina, Director of the Research Institute of State Construction and Local Government at the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Law, Professor (by agreement), and Hanna Sukhotska, an independent expert, Honorary President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), Doctor of Law, Professor (by agreement).

The decree says that all members of the commission should participate in its activities personally, without delegating their powers to other persons, and they do not have the right to transfer their vote to anyone. Commission members perform their duties on a voluntary basis and completely free of charge. Organizational and technical support is provided by the Presidential Administration and the State Affairs Department.
The decree comes into force from the date it was signed – from Oct. 4.
