Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree on reviving territory affected by the Chornobyl disaster and supporting liquidators who responded to the accident.

The decree was drawn up following a meeting on April 26 during the president’s working visit to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a statement posted on the presidential website on Thursday said.

According to the decree, the Ukrainian government should take measures to develop and revive the contaminated areas, including within the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve.

The government is ordered to adopt legislation on the legal regulation of these territories and consider the expediency of keeping in place restrictions and bans on specific activities there, as well as to support the development of the reserve by making decisions on its administration and functioning.

“In the decree, special attention is paid to measures to provide social security to people hurt by the Chornobyl disaster. The government has to decide on increasing the disability pensions for liquidators of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster and breadwinner-loss pensions for children of liquidators. The decree is also intended to improve state policies on the handling of radioactive waste and turning the Shelter facility into an environmentally safe system,” the statement said.
