You're reading: Poroshenko to spell out Ukraine’s stance on peacekeepers’ introduction in Donbas at UN General Assembly

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will touch on the issue of introducing a peacekeeping mission in Donbas within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly on September 20, Ukrainian Permanent Representative to the UN Volodymyr Yelchenko said.

“Poroshenko will deliver a speech at the General Assembly, it is reasonable to spell out our vision. The point is not in whether Russia likes this or not, we have the right to have our own convictions, we will promote them within the General Assembly, as well. The Ukrainian president will speak up on September 20; the UN Security Council will hold a special meeting dedicated to peacemaking. I think that it will be another reason to speak about our vision of the UN role in Donbas,” Yelchenko said in a commentary to Radio Liberty (Svoboda).

This is a very complicated issue, he said. “Unless this conflict is frozen, so, hostilities are stopped, I believe that neither country can allow itself to dispatch its peacekeepers, who would act in the conditions of active combat actions,” the diplomat said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier on Tuesday that the UN peacekeepers’ presence in Donbas would benefit conflict settlement in south-eastern Ukraine and instructed the Russian Foreign Ministry to submit a relevant draft resolution for the consideration of the UN Security Council.
