Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on the High Council of Justice, according to the Ukrainian parliament’s website.

The document was registered in parliament on Sept. 23 and the head of state flagged it as urgent.

According to the amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine in part of justice, which will enter into force on Sept. 30, 2016, the High Council of Justice will be transformed and renamed. However, the Ukrainian parliament won’t meet for the next session before October 4, 2016, so lawmakers won’t be able to vote for the relevant bill before the constitutional amendments will take effect.

The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine in part of justice on June 2, 2016. Some 335 lawmakers voted for the law in parliament with the quorum being 300 votes. On the same day, the parliament passed the amended law on the judicial system and the status of judges, which is aimed at implementing the constitutional changes.

The next meeting of the Verkhovna Rada is scheduled for October 4, 2016.
