The consequences of the recent gas crisis was the final loss of the image of a reliable partner by Russia’s Gazprom and the clear intention of Russian leadership to use gas supplies to Europe as a tool of geopolitical fight, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

“Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to the European Commission, the EU member states to abandon the intentions of building the Nord Stream 2, as a project that threatens energy security of Ukraine and the EU,” Poroshenko said at a joint briefing with High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Federica Mogherini on Monday in Kyiv.

According to him, during the talks, the parties could not ignore the need to strengthen cooperation in the issues of energy security of Ukraine and the EU in connection with the latest steps made by Gazprom.

“We need to make important conclusions from this gas crisis: first, Gazprom has lost the image of a reliable partner in the energy sphere, not only for Ukraine, but also for the European Union. Secondly, Gazprom, or more precisely, the Kremlin, clearly showed its intention to use in the future the issue of gas supply to Europe as a tool of geopolitical fight, deliberately neglecting both contractual obligations and justice,” the Ukrainian president said.
