You're reading: Prosecutors say gold belonging to Yanukovych ‘family’ arrested in European country

A large batch of gold has been seized in one of the European countries a few weeks ago, from the funds withdrawn by former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his entourage, the so-called “family,” Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yevhen Yenin has said.

Just a few weeks ago, within the framework of cooperation with one European country, we received information about the arrest of a large batch of gold. There is more than a half-ton of it,” Yenin said in an interview with the Insider edition, published on Sept. 4.

According to the deputy prosecutor general, the total amount of losses inflicted on the state by the regime of Viktor Yanukovych is about $40 billion.

Of these, $1.5 billion, arrested in Ukraine, already returned to the treasury.

“To date, an amount equivalent to about $200 million has been arrested in various jurisdictions, mainly in Europe, but it’s too early to say that we have lost all opportunities to find other assets stolen by the Yanukovych regime,” Yenin said.
