Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan on June 28; Moscow and Paris stand for the prevention of an escalation of tensions between Iran and the United States, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said.

Ushakov told journalists about the president’s schedule, which envisages a number of bilateral contacts, prior to Putin’s visit to the G20 summit. Preparations for a meeting between Putin and Macron on June 28 are well under way.

“The presidents are expected to pay special attention to the situation surrounding Iran and its nuclear program. Russia and France are united by common objectives: maintaining the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] and preventing an escalation of tensions between Iran and the United States and in the Persian Gulf area in general,” Ushakov said.

Practical aspects of the political settlement in Syria are within the focus of the leaders’ regular discussions, he said.

The leaders will exchange views on other relevant international issues as well, Ushakov said. “Russia and France facilitate the settlement of the domestic Ukrainian conflict, primarily within the Normandy format. The universally recognized basis of the peace process is the Minsk Package of Measures drafted in 2015. It appears that the prospects of its further implementation are to be discussed in the light of the actions of the new Ukrainian leadership,” he said.
