Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has extended the increased export duty for scrap ferrous metal in the amount of €30 per tonne for one more year, taking into account the proposals of the Ukrainian president.

Bill No. 6382 was passed by parliamentarians on July 13 (247 supporting votes).

Representative of the president of Ukraine in the Verkhovna Rada, Iryna Lutsenko (Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction) said presenting the document in parliament that the head of state proposed to extend the bill not for two years as earlier the lawmakers approved, but for one year.

As reported, on July 12, 2016 Ukraine adopted law No. 1455-VIII on amending certain laws of Ukraine concerning the reduction of the deficit of scrap iron in the domestic market, which from September 15, 2016 raised export duties on scrap metal from €10 per tonne to €30 per tonne for a year.

In April 2017, bill No. 6382 prolonging the €30 scrap metal duty for two more years. The bill was passed on June 8 in parliament and signed by the Rada speaker on June 12. The prime minister and the Economic Development and Trade Ministry supported the bill.

Scrap metal collectors back the annulment of the scrap metal exports duty. The EU Delegation to Ukraine expressed alarm with the extension of the duty.

Poroshenko partially vetoed bill No. 6382 on extension of the export duty on scrap ferrous metal in the amount of €30 per tonne for two more years, proposing to extend it by one year. The parliamentary committee for industrial policy and entrepreneurship at a meeting on July 11 approved the proposals of the president.
