You're reading: Rada mulls proposal to ban bail for bribery suspects

A draft law that would prevent bribery suspects from posting bail before trial has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The draft law would introduce changes to Ukraine’s Criminal Procedural Code (No. 6519) regarding the provision of guarantees to convicted persons who have committed corruption crimes. The changes were proposed by a group of Rada deputies from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc Party faction and the People’s Party faction.

The proposal introduces changes to Article 138 (“remanded into custody”) portion of the Criminal Procedural Code.

If the measure is passed, individuals indicted in criminal cases involving illegal enrichment and bribery, illegal enrichment using official status and abuse of power or public office would not be eligible to post bail.

However, posting bail would be possible in cases of repeat pretrial confinement.
