You're reading: Rada sends bill to Constitutional court to expand its powers

The Verkhovna Rada has forwarded to the Constitutional Court a bill (No. 1028) “On Amending Article 85 of the Constitution of Ukraine (regarding advisory, consultative and other subsidiary bodies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine)” and included it in the agenda of the session.

Some 264 deputies voted for such a decision on Sept. 3 evening.

The initiator of the bill – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky – proposes to expand the powers of the Verkhovna Rada and give it the right to create advisory, consultative and other subsidiary bodies “within the means provided for in the state budget of Ukraine.”

The bill notes that these bodies are created to carry out their functions by the Verkhovna Rada.

The explanatory note to the bill indicates that the introduction of this amendment to Article 85 of the Constitution of Ukraine is necessary to reform the system of bodies that ensure the functioning of the parliament as the only legislative body in Ukraine.
