You're reading: Rada supports appointment of Andriy Zahorodniuk as defense minister of Ukraine

The Verkhovna Rada has supported the appointment of Andriy Zahorodniuk to the post of Defense Minister of Ukraine upon the recommendation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Some 314 parliamentarians voted for the appointment of Zahorodniuk as head of the Defense Ministry at a plenary meeting on Aug. 29 evening, an Interfax-Ukraine agency correspondent reported.

The Minister of Defense, the Minister of Foreign Affairs are appointed by the Verkhovna Rada upon the recommendation of the President of Ukraine. Other members of the government are appointed by the Parliament upon the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

Andriy Zahorodniuk is ex-head of the project office of the Ministry of Defense reform. He graduated from Taras Shevchenko National University, University of Warwick and Oxford University. He has over 16 years of experience in senior positions in the mining and manufacturing industries. He is a public activist, volunteer of the Armed forces of Ukraine since 2014. On July 5, 2019, he was appointed as a non-staff advisor to President Zelensky.
