Reconstruction work will begin at St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv this year, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has said.

“St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv is a landmark of UNESCO World Heritage. The temple is 256 years old, and its restoration will start in 2018. The government allocated Hr 20 million for this,” he wrote in his Twitter microblog on February 13.

According to him, a company dealing with reconstruction was selected in early January through the ProZorro electronic procurement system.

Groysman noted that the cathedral currently needs repairs, “from electricity and drainage to strengthening the facade.” In addition, the entrance gates are now in an emergency condition, he said.

“The other day, when I visited St. George’s Cathedral, I saw hundreds of tourists and believers visiting the temple. We have history, memory, spirituality, and it’s important to protect them,” he said.
