You're reading: Restaurant catches fire in heat-struck Kyiv

As Kyiv continued to bake in a long-lasting heatwave, fire broke out on Aug. 21 in the restaurant “Sham” at 42 Pobedy Avenue.

Kyiv firefighters were called to the scene at 4.50 p.m. The fire started on a summer terrace, and damaged an area of about 500 square meters.

The State Service for Emergency Situations of Ukraine confirmed that by 5.22 pm fire had been brough under control, and currently there is no threat of the fire spreading to the residential buildings and Pushkin Park nearby. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

Eighteen vehicles and 85 firefighters attended the scene of the fire, according to city authorities. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

“Sham” served Middle Eastern and Ukrainian cuisine.
