Russia has clashed with the United States and European powers at the United Nations over the legality of elections in areas of eastern Ukraine held by Moscow-backed separatists.

EU Members of the Security Council made a joint statement on Ukraine on Oct. 30, in which they condemned the illegitimate "elections" planned for Nov. 11 in the separatist-held parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine.
