Russian-backed forces shelled Ukrainian army positions near the town of Maryinka in Donetsk region overnight on June 10, wounding two local civilians, the military has reported.

The shelling of the town, which lies about 600 kilometers southeast of Kyiv on the front line of the Donbas war zone, started at 11 p.m. and lasted for about an hour, the Ukrainian military said.

The condition of the two wounded civilians – a man and a woman – is critical, according to Donetsk regional police chief Vyacheslav Abroskin. Police have classified the incident as a terrorist attack.

Meanwhile, a few kilometers to the north of Maryinka, the city of Krasnohorivka, which had a pre-war popultaion of 15,937, also came under attack as Russian-backed forces fired mortar and tank shells into a residential area.

There has been a surge in fighting in the Donbas in recent days. Russian-backed forces have launched a total of 71 attacks on Ukrainian army positions positions in Donbas over the past day.

Elsewhere in Donetsk Oblast, the enemy fired grenade launchers, mortars and small arms at Ukrainian positions near Shyrokyne, a ruined and abandoned coastal settlement located some 20 kilometers east of the port city of Mariupol, and there were also attacks on the nearby villages of Lebedynske and Vodiane.

The situation was also tense in the Luhansk Oblast towns of Katerynivka, Novooleksandrivka and Novozvanivka where Russian-backed forces attacked with artillery.

As a result of the last day’s fighting, one Ukrainian soldier was wounded, bringing the overall number of wounded over the past week to 37. Four Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action in the last week, according to Ukrainian military reports.

Russia’s war against Ukraine has been raging for three years. The fighting has killed over 10,000 people and displaced at least 1.5 million, the United Nations estimates.
