A Russian citizen trying to cross into Ukraine with a container containing an unknown radioactive substance has been detained at the Hoptivka border checkpoint in Kharkiv region, the eastern regional department of the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service said.

A Yantar stationary detector of radioactive and nuclear materials detected the retort onboard the Russian citizen’s VAZ vehicle, the department said.

“The vehicle was examined, and a retort emitting significant levels of radioactivity was found in the personal belongings of the 38-year-old Russian. There is tentative information that the object is a component part of an aircraft device,” the department said.

Border guards informed law enforcement agencies about an instance of illegal handing of radioactive material.

The Russian citizen and the container were handed over to the Ukrainian National Police.
