KHARKIV – During the passage of border control at a checkpoint in the Kharkiv region on July 2, a couple from the Russian Federation appealed to the employees of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine with a request to grant them a refugee status, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has reported.

“Last night, at a border crossing point on the border with Russia, a family of Russians asked for refugee status in Ukraine,” the state border department’s press service said on July 3.

According to the information, a 32-year-old Russian citizen and his 33-year-old wife, also a Russian citizen, who arrived to the border with a small child, applied with a corresponding statement.

“They came from a neighboring country on foot with a small child, while Russian citizens told during a conversation that they were forced to ask for refugee status in connection with political persecution. The persecution of Russians began after the man expressed his position on the change of power in Russia. He was prosecuted for this and now is liable to further criminal liability,” a message says.

After registration of the relevant documents, the family was handed over to the representatives of the State Migration Service of Ukraine.
