TBILISI – Mikheil Saakashvili, ex-president of Georgia and head of the executive committee of the National Reforms Council under the President of Ukraine, has called on the Georgian opposition to unite its forces before the parliamentary elections and promised that he will be “on the frontline” of the political struggle for a replacement of the Georgian government.

“I’m not going to calmly watch Georgia being destroyed […] Of course, I am in this struggle. Of course, we are going to win,” Saakashvili said on June 11 in a video address on Facebook to his supporters in Georgia regarding the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held in October.

The Georgian opposition should unite, he said.

“Those who want to help people, we should all stand together. I will really be on the frontline of this struggle, in any case,” Saakashvili said.

In May, Georgia recalled its ambassador from Kyiv for consultations concerning Saakashvili’s appointment to the post of head of the executive committee of the National Reforms Council under the President of Ukraine.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia then said he hoped Saakashvili would not be allowed to interfere in the internal affairs of Georgia from Kyiv.

“How can they keep Mikheil Saakashvili […] from interfering in the internal affairs of Georgia? That interests me very much, and I will be following it,” Gakharia told reporters at the time.

The Georgian authorities have so far not reacted to the new statements by Saakashvili on the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country.
