You're reading: Saakashvili proposes central Kyiv march in support of presidential impeachment law

Mikheil Saakashvili, the leader of the Movement of New Forces, ex-governor of Ukraine’s Odesa region and ex-president of Georgia, has proposed a march in central Kyiv November 12, in support of the laws on presidential impeachment and an anti-corruption court.

“I suggest that we hold a march on November 12 for the passage of a law on the anti-corruption court and the impeachment of the president, that we gather in Mykhailivska Square and support this demand with our procession,” Saakashvili said during a rally in Constitution Square outside the Verkhovna Rada building on November 7 evening.

The passage of the Electoral Code in the first reading marks the first victory for demonstrators outside the Rada building, he said.

Should the government ignore the protestors’ demands and fail to pass these laws, then the people can begin the process of “popular impeachment” on December 3, he said.

“If they [authorities] pass nothing, then the people of Ukraine themselves will decide whom to impeach, whom to fire, and when to hold new elections,” Saakashvili said.

Several hundred people gathered outside the parliament building on Tuesday evening, an Interfax correspondent reported. They are listening and speeches by Saakashvili, activists and parliamentarians, as well as music performances. The general atmosphere is quiet.

The tent camp is flanked by door frame metal detectors in nearby streets, with a small number of police officers randomly checking bags on the subject of prohibited items.
