You're reading: SAPO closes cases on illegal enrichment

The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine (SAPO) has announced the closure of 65 criminal proceedings following the Ukrainian Constitutional Court’s decision to find a Criminal Code article on illegal enrichment unconstitutional.

“Sixty-five criminal proceedings had been closed by March 28, 2019. The approximate amount of possible illegal enrichment at the center of criminal proceedings investigated by detectives of NABU [the National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine] amounts to Hr 1.334 billion, $1.137 million and  531,000 euro,” the press service of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office said on March 28.

Following the Constitutional Court’s decision, a decision was adopted to close criminal proceedings in which suspicions were still pending and also criminal proceedings against suspects still under pretrial investigation, it said.

On February 28, 2019, the Ukrainian authorities closed a criminal case opened on December 4, 2018, against Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov and dealing with his illicit enrichment in an amount of Hr 115 million (an apartment and two non-residential facilities in London).

On March 6, the authorities closed criminal proceedings launched on August 29, 2018 against former head of Ukraine’s State Fiscal Service Myroslav Prodan, whose illegal income was estimated at Hr 88.1 million (two apartments at the French Quarter housing complex in Kyiv, a house in Kyiv region, two houses in Turkey, a Mercedes-Benz GLE and two Toyota Land Cruiser cars).

On March 15, the authorities closed a criminal case opened on April 24, 2018, against former Ukrainian Finance Minister Oleksandr Danyliuk, whose illegal enrichment was estimated at Hr 28.8 million (apartments in London).

Criminal proceedings against 15 MPs have also been closed, the press service said.
