You're reading: Savchenko blames SBU for blocking registration of her as presidential candidate

Ukrainian parliamentarian Nadiia Savchenko claims that the investigating authorities prevent from registering her as the presidential candidature to take part in Ukraine’s elections scheduled for March 31, 2019.

“Now I understand that I cannot take part in the election campaign because Ukraine’s SBU Security Service illegally does not allow a notary to me. Everything starts with a notary. I need a notary in order to become a candidate, register, go through the whole procedure. And the SBU is blocking this process, they do not allow a notary to me, although they do not have the right to do this,” Savchenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday during a break in the court hearing to consider the complaint about the opening of criminal proceedings, answering the question of whether she already has a vision of her participation in the election campaign.

She reported that in connection with this obstacle she turned to international bodies, to the relevant authorities of Ukraine and law enforcement agencies. “This issue will be resolved – we will talk about the next steps … There is no result so far,” the parliamentarian added.

According to her, there are “replies that they do not know how they can do it.”

“They, of course, will let a notary to me and admit their mistake, but already after the registration is completed. This is their goal … They prevent at this stage, so as not to openly interfere at the stage when I am registered. Then it will be perfectly obvious,” Savchenko added.

Savchenko has been in custody since March 23. On March 22, the Verkhovna Rada supported the recommendations of Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko and authorized the prosecution, detention, and arrest of Savchenko. She is suspected of trying to change or overthrow the constitutional system or take state power by force, trying to kill statesmen and public figures, preparing to carry out a terrorist attack, creating a terrorist group or terrorist organization, and handling weapons, munitions, or explosives illegally.
