You're reading: Savchenko urges Putin to release ‘Ukrainian political prisoners’

Ukrainian non-faction MP Nadiia Savchenko has appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to release Ukrainian prisoners held in Russia she called political ones.

“Taking advantage of an opportunity, probably the last one, I want to address once again the president of the Russian Federation: no matter what geopolitical situation evolves, man remains a man, and each democratic politician should value a human life. I have never asked for pardoning me. I ask you once again: release Ukrainian political prisoners and captives, release people, and swap them for your people. Give freedom and life to people,” Savchenko told reporters at Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky District Court on Friday evening, while the judge retreated for deliberations.

“You have really showed the entire world that human rights for you are one of the key aspects, on which democracy is being built. Following the Russian presidential election and until a sports holiday (…) there is an opportunity, there is a political window for releasing people, and I wish you success in this,” the MP said, addressing to European politicians either.
