You're reading: SBI sends cases against suspects in journalist Serhiyenko murder case to court

The State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) has sent to court the indictments against two members of a criminal group who are suspected of abducting and killing journalist Vasyl Serhiyenko, who was a Euromaidan activist.

“One of the parties of the case is charged with creating a criminal organization which acted from November 2013 until July 2015 in the territories of Kyiv and Cherkasy regions (Part 1 of Article 255 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The other one [is charged] with illegally breaking into a household in Korsun-Shevchenkivsky, Cherkasy region, as part of a criminal group on April 4, 2014, abducting and killing activist of the Euromaidan Self-Defense Group in Cherkasy region, journalist Vasyl Serhiyenko with extreme brutality (Part 1 of Article 255, Part 2 of Article 162, clauses 3, 4, 6, 11, 12 of Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine),” the press service of the SBI said on Facebook.

As reported, Serhiyenko was abducted and murdered in April 2014.

In July 2017, the Prosecutor’s Office of Cherkasy region approved and sent to court an indictment against the organizer and one of the perpetrators of the crime Vadym Melnyk and Viktor Horbenko.

On November 16, 2018, Sosnovsky District Court of Cherkasy released the suspects on bail.

During the investigation proceedings, Melnyk did not name the instigator.

On August 23, 2019, Horodyschensky District Court of Cherkasy region ruled to change a measure of restraint for Melnyk to house arrest.
