You're reading: SBU chief Bakanov handles updated draft law on SBU to president

Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Ivan Bakanov has submitted to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky a new version of the draft law on security service of Ukraine, SBU press center reported.

“A month and a half ago, the head of the service from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada guaranteed the deputies and the public that the SBU would develop a new version of the law ‘On the Security Service of Ukraine’ as soon as possible. This obligation is fulfilled on time,” the report said.

According to the report, the document was handled to the National Security and Defense Council and National Institute for Strategic Studies.

Thus, the priority areas for reforming the SBU are: abandonment of functions unusual for special state agencies; enlargement of the counterintelligence vector of work; introduction of a flexible structure; staff optimization; demilitarization; increasing the level of social security of employees; minimization of risks of political interference in the activities of security agencies; improving the procedure for international cooperation and exchange of information with partner intelligence services; improving the system of democratic civilian control over the activities of the special services.
