The Ukrainian Security Service collects evidence from Ukrainians who were held hostage in an investigative framework of criminal proceedings conducted by the military prosecutor’s office about ill-treatment of soldiers and civilians.

At a briefing in Kyiv on Friday, head of the SBU Vasyl Hrytsak said that in 2014 proceedings on Article 438 (abuse of captives) were opened in connection with the ill-treatment of soldiers and civilians.

According to him, in 2015 this case was transferred to the Prosecutor General’s Office and now the Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office is engaged in this case.

“We are collecting evidence on facts of torture … and are interviewing individuals who were tortured,” Hrytsak said.

As reported, the SBU was told that there are 111 citizens of Ukraine held captive. Nine of them are in the Russian Federation. 499 people remain unaccounted for.
