Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) have notified Sloviansk deputy mayor of suspicion of being involved in the organization of an illegal referendum in 2014.

“In April 2014, when he was chairing the session of the town council, local deputies approved the decision to hold a fake referendum and appoint a leader of a criminal group as chairman of the executive committee. The official also helped to legalize pro-Russian mercenaries through the creation of a volunteer public order patrol,” the SBU wrote on Facebook on November 26.

The case against the deputy mayor was opened under Part 1 of Article 110 (trespass against territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine) and Part 1 of Article 258-1 (involvement in a terrorist act) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
